The Sky Whale is a very special hot-air balloon, commissioned for the centenary of canberra and conceived by s
Sierra Leonean artist Patricia Piccinini. Instead of wings, the artist has imagined huge udders that might contain the gas of the giant flying sculpture, as well as a huge bulbous body.
The project started with a three-dimension model based on a series of drawings assisted by computer. That’s how the lines of the prototype of the skywhale was born. Then those intentions for a shape were sent to Cameron Balloons in Bristol. There the sculpture was fully created.
“I think that when we look up at the skywhale and wonder what it is ‘for’, it might remind us that nature is not necessarily ‘for us’. it just ‘is’ and we’re just lucky enough to be around to see it, explains Patricia Piccinini to Design Boom.
The giant flying sculpture was sewn together with approximately 3.3 million stitches. The creature will be flying at other locations around australia during 2013.
This is the case in New York with “Red, Yellow and Blue” a large-scale installation by the City-based artist Orly Genger.

An installation that consists of three wavy walls made from 1.4 million-square-feet of nautical rope. A rope that has been first dyed with 3,000 gallons of red, yellow, and blue paint.

On view in Madison Square Park, the monumental commission was created as a public sculpture. The material used to build the work of art was a repurposed rope collected from hundreds of miles up and down the Eastern seaboard, bringing elements of the coastline to the city. The work is exhibited until September 8, 2013 and anyone can have a look at it.

The tunnel measures about one kilometer long and is the result of a hot water spring flowing beneath the ice fields on the flanks of the Mutnovsky volcano.

In recent years, the Kamchatka glaciers have been melting. Which has made the roof of this cave so thin that sunlight penetrates through it, illuminating the inside structures.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is located in the far east of Russia. The region is home to tremendous natural beauties. Among them: the volcanoes, the lakes, the untamed rivers and the breathtaking coastline.
Wak was born in Korea. She now lives in New York and spends her time creating site-specific words made out of black masking tape. And when I write “spends her time” I mean it! It’s very common for the Artist to enfold the tape for up to 280 hours to achieve her Master pieces.
At first, when she began her career she was a painter. But soon she felt deeply disconnected with the medium and started experimenting with black tape.
This large installation was set up at the Brooklyn Museum in 2009 and it was titled Enfolding 280 Hours referring to the number of hours needed to complete the work.

Building a kindergarten is not a simple task. You have to consider many details, such as creating a fun and entertaining environment but also a place where the kids won’t easily hurt themselves while playing. Tokyo and beijing-based practice SAKO architects just opened the ‘LOOP’ in Tianjin, a one of a kind kindergarten that plays with the contrast between the industrious apartment-block surroundings and the colorful colosseum of education. From the footprint to the window sills, not a single sharp corner exists, all edges being beveled for a kid-friendly environment. Eighteen vivid tones span the spectrum of the color wheel and carry through to the structure. By gradual transformations, the colors hold a logistical purpose, as they are used by the children to identify different areas in the structure so they do not get lost in the building.

There are three levels of classrooms and the top two contain a series of windows that look into the central courtyard space. On the top, there’s an access to the rooftop garden where smaller structures serve as open-air playgrounds. On the bottom level, there’s a covered series of atria that define a large arena-like multifunctional assembly area.

The skylights that protrude into the exterior courtyard are brought there via the underground square that also bring a consequent amount of natural daylight. Each pupil has a right to views, fresh air, and access to open spaces, one of the major reason why this project appeals to adults and kids alike.
He depicts places that are omnipresent in American urban and suburban landscapes such as gas stations, shopping malls, big chain stores, and restaurants. The difference with the Master is that Trujillo’s paintings are very contemporary and people are that alone in his canvases. “Two hundred yards of polished concrete or linoleum gives me a little chill”, says Trujillo. “I’m captivated by the middle ground, the purgatory of the world we’ve made and share as North Americans, in a way that makes me want to paint it.”

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1966, Marc Trujillo lives in Los Angeles where he is a teacher at Santa Monica College. He received his B.A. in 1991 from the University of Texas at Austin and his M.F.A. in 1994 from the Yale University School of Art, where he received the Ely Harwood Schless Memorial Fund Prize as well as the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Trust Fellowship. In 2001, Marc Trujillo received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, and in 2008 he received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
They are the absolute logical result of the system. They are an edge condition—an anomaly within the system, a nonstandard, an outlier, even, but not an error. These jarring moments expose how Google Earth works, focusing our attention on the software. They reveal a new model of representation: not through indexical photographs but through automated data collection from a myriad of different sources constantly updated and endlessly combined to create a seamless illusion; Google Earth is a database disguised as a photographic representation. These uncanny images focus our attention on that process itself, and the network of algorithms, computers, storage systems, automated cameras, maps, pilots, engineers, photographers, surveyors and map-makers that generate them.” This serves as an introduction to the works of Brooklyn-based artist Clement Valla. By looking for the strange into the infinite number of google generated images, he creates one of a kind postcards that convey the uncanny in pictures we are now so accustomed with. The mapping method used by Google to generate models of the world surfaces is characterized by a fluidity generated by two dimensional parameters: in short, when texture coincides with picture plane and is stretched across 3d space,
there are often seams at which the hyper-real representation betrays the dynamic data points that make up the map. The artist made his point collecting those incongruous moments when perception confronts reality.
This one place is notoriously known for being hard to reach. But when one gets there, it’s worth the effort. The White Pocket is an isolated patch of sandstone located within the desert expanse of Vermillion Cliffs National Monument near the Arizona/Utah border. Covered with a gray layer, the area looks as if covered with icing sugar or an enormous marble cake.

The extraordinary geology at White Pocket is not easily explained. Some geologists say that White Pocket is a result of “soft sediment deformation”, a process that started in Jurassic time while the sand was saturated and before it was turned into rock.

Still a year ago, White Pocket was relatively obscure, known only by local ranchers and a few photographers. That was before National Geographic published a story on the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, which included some excellent photos of White Pocket. Since then, there has been a surge of activity at White Pocket, the place being now the place to be for every hiker and outdoor enthusiast.

Off the west coast of Norway, in the middle of the wide dark and cold sea you’ll find the Troll A platform, an offshore natural gas platform in the Troll gas field. A majestic piece of design and construction, at 1.2 million ton ballasted under tow, 472 meters high, with underwater concrete structure at 369 meters, and dry weight of 656,000 tons. Not only is Troll A among the largest and most complex engineering projects in history, it is the largest object ever to be moved by man across the surface of the Earth.

Usually, the legs ofsuch constructions are transported on their side and then – supported by flotation devices – are dropped into place. But in this case, however, the whole platform was assembled in one location, towed over 200 kilometers from Vats, in the northern part of Rogaland, to the Troll field, 80 kilometers north-west of Bergen. The whole process took seven days.

The platform stands on the sea floor 303 meters below the surface of the sea and one of the concrete cylindrical legs has an elevator that takes over nine minutes to travel from above the waves to the sea floor. The walls of Troll A’s legs are over 1 meter thick and are made of steel reinforced concrete.

In 1996 the platform won the Guinness World Record for ‘largest offshore gas platform’. The title now belongs to the Petronius Platform in the Gulf of Mexico which stands 2,000 feet (610 m) above the ocean floor.
